The Sternohyoid
The sternohyoid muscle is a thin, strap-like muscle located in the anterior (front) part of the neck. It extends from the sternum (breastbone) and clavicle (collarbone) down to the hyoid bone, a small U-shaped bone located in the neck. The sternohyoid muscle is responsible for several movements of the hyoid bone and the larynx, including depression of the hyoid bone during swallowing and speaking and stabilization of the larynx during breathing. The muscle also maintains posture and stabilizes the neck during various activities, such as lifting or carrying. The sternohyoid muscle is innervated by the ansa cervicalis. This nerve loop arises from the cervical spinal nerves (C1-C3), and works in conjunction with other muscles of the neck and shoulder girdle to produce efficient movements during various activities. Dysfunction or weakness of the sternohyoid muscle can lead to difficulties swallowing, speaking, and postural imbalances in the neck and shoulder region.
